TaxReady

Canadian books your accountant can actually use.

Double-entry bookkeeping built for Canada first — GIFI codes, capital cost allowance, GST/HST and provincial sales tax, source deductions and T4s. Payroll is included, not an add-on.

Free while TaxReady is in beta. No card, no time limit during the beta. What it will cost after.

For bookkeepers and accountants, the practice portal is free and stays free — set up and manage as many client businesses as you carry, from one place. Join the paid advisory group.

Try the payroll calculator first

Free, no sign-up: work out CPP, CPP2, EI and income tax on any paycheque, in any province, with the employer’s share shown beside it and every figure explained. It is the same calculation the product’s own pay runs use, checked against CRA’s calculator.

What it does

A real ledger, not a spreadsheet with invoices

Double-entry throughout, with posted entries that cannot be edited — only reversed or corrected, both of which leave a trail.

  • Every figure on every report clicks through to the entries behind it
  • Fiscal periods lock, and a filed tax period is hard-blocked
  • A complete audit log of who changed what, and when

Receivables and payables that actually tie

Every posting to a control account has to name the customer or supplier it belongs to, so the aged listing always agrees with the balance sheet.

  • Invoices and bills, credit notes, write-offs and batch payments
  • Invoices emailed with a PDF attached
  • Early-settlement discounts and overdue interest, on the customer or the one invoice

Payroll, included

Pay runs that split what you owe three ways and track every part per employee — take-home now, CRA on the remittance date, vacation until it is used.

  • Remittance schedule with due dates, and a worksheet split by employee and component
  • Vacation accrual, time taken, and termination payouts
  • T4 worksheet and WCB workpaper prepared from the posted runs

Bank and credit card, reconciled properly

Import CSV, Excel or PDF statements, code them once and let the rules do it next time. Transfers between your own accounts are spotted and posted once.

  • Reconciliation working papers an accountant can read, exportable to Excel
  • Deposits in transit and outstanding payments named and totalled
  • Credit cards reconcile the same way, read as the amount owing

Built for Canada, not adapted to it

  • GIFI codes on the chart of accounts, ready for the T2
  • GST/HST returns, and PST, QST or RST where the business is registered
  • Capital cost allowance with the half-year rule, recapture and terminal loss
  • Source deductions, T4s and WCB
  • Corporations and sole proprietorships handled differently, because they are different

Why it costs a third of what the big packages do

The larger packages pay a data aggregator every month for every bank account they connect, and pay again for the integrations bolted around them. Those bills arrive whether you use the features or not, and they end up in your subscription.

  • No feed aggregator fees, because you import the statement yourself
  • No integration marketplace to maintain, certify and support
  • Payroll built in rather than licensed from somebody else and resold to you
  • What is left is the software, and software is what you are paying for

What it does not do

Worth knowing before you start rather than three weeks in.

  • No live bank feeds. You download the statement from your bank and import it — CSV, Excel or PDF.
  • It does not file your returns. It prepares them and links you to the government portal; you file there, and it never sees your government credentials.
  • Payroll deductions are calculated for convenience. Check them against the CRA calculator before you run payroll on them.
